The subhead of the anonymously run site asks, "What could be more fun than Bush v. Sharpton in 2004?” Reading further: “Turn the 2004 Democratic primary into the most bizarre political circus in history.”
Those words preview the fun found on the web site Republicans for Sharpton (www.republicansforsharpton.com), whose site recently encouraged Republicans to vote for the Reverend Al Sharpton in the online primary hosted by the liberal site MoveOn. Unfortunately, he only received 0.53% percent of the vote, but why ruin the fun? The web site pushes the concept of this unlikely, but highly entertaining concept with humor, information on Sharpton and the sales of Bush vs. Sharpton in 2004 shirts and buttons.
More encouraging to the anonymous owners of the site are the results of a Gallup poll last month which placed him fourth among Democratic contenders, tied at 7% with Senator Edwards. He was first among black Democratic candidates with 24% support.
Republicans can't help but feel the excitement of Sharpton, along with Howard Dean, pulling the democratic party even further to the left. The longer they can keep Sharpton talking, and in the Democratic debates, the more light that will be shined on the truly far left stances of the Democratic party.
As CNN conservative commentator Tucker Carlson said, “The beauty of Sharpton is that he is the physical embodiment of the values of his party. It’s puzzling to me why Democrats would be embarrassed of him, since he’s an incredibly articulate and forceful voice for liberalism.”
Not so puzzling, really. It's always been the party's campaigning tactic to look more centrist than they truly are.
Dean, Kucinich, Braun and Sharpton. Democratic insiders are worried. They should be.
