Sarandon says even September 11
could not diminish American arrogance

Country as divided as during the Civil War

Susan Sarandon, speaking in the U.K. to the BBC’s TV and radio listings magazine, Radio Times, took the chance to once again bash America. Following the many others in Hollywood who save their best anti-American attacks for foreign soil, Sarandon said that America is arrogant and that President G.W. Bush is responsible for a country that is more divided than at any other time since the Civil War.

According to the BBC News, World Edition, it began when Sarandon was explaining her anti-war stance. She told the Radio Times that her generation had “screwed up” the world, and that “now we have to unscrew it. Maybe things have to get so bad before we wake up.”

"I lost a very dear friend in the Twin Towers on 11 September and thought the shock was so huge that American arrogance would be diminished."

"Instead, our president has turned it into one of the most divisive times since the Civil War."

She added that she had become the subject of a “witch-hunt.”

The Oscars

Earlier in the interview she railed against the Academy Awards organizers, who she said tried to control what the Hollywood celebrities said and did.

"The organizers have gone over the top trying to control it and make sure nothing happens.” Anyone who watched Sarandon present at the Oscars ceremony this year will agree that the actress looked resentful and angry for having to hold back a political statement.

“I resent they make you sign a piece of paper saying you'll never sell the statuette, except back to them for $1 " she said.

"I changed that to 'market value'. It's only an Oscar, not sperm."

She said that she tried to sell the other stars dove-shaped peace brooches in aid of land-mine victims.

"You'd be surprised who wouldn't even wear one," she said. "I guess they're nervous of me."
