[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of Maarten Rischen’s “Serenity?” single and video release.
I love experimental instrumental music. “Serenity?”, composed and performed by Maarten Rischen is an utterly perfect example of when music becomes poetry. The recording of the Rhodes Piano was done live on a beach in Koh Phangan, Thailand and is totally improvised. Rischen performed to the sound of the waves, the motion of the planet turning, and the exquisite interpretive dance by Alina Spittan.
I encourage you to experience all this magic by watching the video, which was further enhanced by the very talented cinematography of In Between Raw Frames and the SFX of Patricio Sanz. As a filmmaker myself, I have nothing but admiration and respect for an artist who marries the music so eloquently to the image. Something I have a hard time separating anyway, always seeing the music in my mind’s eye.
The track itself takes us on quite a ride, from sublime and gentle to a loud and rocking joyous celebration. But then even at its quietest moments, the music sounds like joy.

A wonderful combination of delicacy and explosive exhalation. It’s a truly gorgeous track, and even at 8 minutes, it feels like not enough time in the company of this brilliant force of nature. In short, I loved it!! More please…
