[NoHo Arts District, CA] – This month’s LA Art blog features Dan Attoe’s Dead of Winter II exhibit at The Hole until February 11.
While Los Angeles may not have winters like Berlin or Chicago, Dead of Winter II reminds us that depending on our mental health and well-being, we may not be immune to gloom and darkness.

Dead of Winter II is a series of works by Dan Attoe exhibiting as a solo exhibition at The Hole in West Hollywood. Featuring crisp (and sometimes uncouth) neon signage, Attoe illuminates The Hole with an angry puffin, a bear with a questionable diet, a bedraggled cat, a woman, and a near-Mars-Attacks brainiac.

Following his exhibition Dead of Winter (featuring similar signage though largely different content), Attoe beams us both a vibrant and bleak series of works. In a cavernous and illuminated space, Attoe reminds us that Angelenos aren’t exempt from winter solstice cycles and long nights. Often these long nights herald Seasonal Affective Disorder (appropriately abbreviated SAD), and we may even have false beacons to help pull us out of SAD.

With a series of impressive accolades and achievement in Attoe’s CV, Attoe grew up in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. Nondiscriminatory of both high-brow and low-brow (as it relates to the fine arts), Attoe is a prolific cult tattoo artist, and has been featured everywhere from ArtForm, LA Times, to Saatchi Gallery, London and Kemper Museum in Kansas City.

Self aware and self proclaimed, Attoe blends a perfect mélange of the sophisticated and the philistine. Neon lights serve us both shades of Las Vegas glamour, as well as the dive bars within. This rings true for Dead of Winter II. Walking around, you feel both welcomed into an unpretentious space, but also intimidated by the brightness and glitz.
