LA Dances Graham100

About the LA Dances Graham100 Program

The April 26 repertoire includes Panorama, El Penitente, Lamentation Variations, Satyric Festival Song, Conversation of Lovers, and Ritual to the Sun (Helios). Martha Graham Dance Company’s Lamentation Variations Project, initiated in 2007 to commemorate 9/11, involves contemporary choreographers creating short works inspired by a 1940 film of Martha Graham dancing Lamentation. Intended for a single performance, audience enthusiasm led to its addition to the company’s permanent repertory.

Two brand new Lamentation Variations will be presented: the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC and Lula Washington Dance Theatre. A third Lamentation Variation created by Larry Keigwin in 2007 will be danced by performers from the CSUN School of Dance.

LA Dances Graham100 aligns with the second year of the company’s three-year celebration of its 100th anniversary, making it the oldest dance company in the United States.

“As part of our centennial we are trying to spread the Graham artistry far and wide, inviting professional (and student) dancers around the world to license a Graham ballet and perform it. So, there’s going to be a collection of them at The Soraya,” said MGDC Artistic Director Janet Eilber.

The program for the evening will include two of Martha Graham’s earliest solos Satyric Festival Song and Deep Song, in addition to El Penitente, Lamentation Variations, Panorama (previously performed at The Soraya) and will close on two pieces of Graham’s later work, Conversation of Lovers, and Ritual to the Sun (Helios).

Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández

The Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández Program (subject to change):

• Los Matachines: This dance takes place during religious celebrations. There are many variants of this dance in different regions of the country but there are similarities as well,  such as colorful costumes, flower crowns, ribbons, feathers, glass beads, mirrors, rattles,  and the main accessories: the bow and arrow, fundamental weapons for the survival of the inhabitants of the arid and semi-arid zones of Mexico.

• Guerrero: The cultural richness of the state of Guerrero is one of the most extensive in  Mexico, internationally recognized for its delicate handicrafts and exquisite textile embroidery. A deeply rooted cultural expression in Guerrero people is dance, which accompanies celebrations, social complaints and represents the flora and fauna of the province.

• La Revolución: This ballet is dedicated to the “soldaderas,” also called Adelitas, women who had a decisive role in the Mexican Revolution, as they took their lives and few belongings to the war scenes. In quick contrast, the aristocrats are seen in a joyous celebration, when a group of rebels breaks into the party, prepared to fight and march towards their destiny: the Revolution.

• Charreada: One of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexico is the Charrería, which arises from the equestrian and livestock activities around the country. Declared  Intangible Heritage by UNESCO, Charrería is considered an art and discipline where men  and women demonstrate their courage with great feats that took place in the old farms of Mexico.

• Fiesta en Tlacotalpan: Spanish culture has a strong influence on Jarocha dance and music, which is why there is percussive footwork in every choreography, a distinctive move of flamenco. This fusion can be appreciated during the celebration of the Virgen de la Candelaria, where the streets are filled with mojigangas, fandango dancers,  jaraneros, and beautiful women who wear the typical Veracruz costume.

• Boda en la Huasteca: This dance tells the story of a young man about to get married. On his way to church, he meets a woman who was getting water in a nearby river. He seduces her and then continues on his way to the wedding. Meanwhile, the bride, accompanied by her friends, dances a prenuptial dance. When the groom finally arrives,  the couple and the guests are dancing when a disgruntled rival appears and challenges the young man to a machete fight. The festive atmosphere turns tragic when the groom kills the lover. But in the end, joy and love conquer death, and the party goes on.

• La danza del Venado: The Deer Dance is an emblematic representation of the state of  Sonora and is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The Deer Dance is a ritual performed before the hunting expeditions and reproduces the movements of the prey with amazing fidelity.

• Fiesta en Jalisco: The state of Jalisco is the land of the Charros, the Chinas, and the  Mariachi, powerful symbols of Mexican identity. Pure Mexican culture is shown in the brilliant folklore of Jalisco, its music, its vigorous and refined dances, and in its dazzling and multicolored costumes.

About Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández

Amalia Hernández was a dancer and choreographer, and founder of the Ballet Folklórico de México in  1952. From a very young age, she began a long journey through Mexican culture that would lead her to rescue the traditional dances around Mexico. She managed to project to the world the beauty of our country through movement, from pre-Columbian cultures and Spanish influences to the revolutionary times.

With her first performances in 1952, she obtained public recognition as a cultural representative of Mexico. Her great success established the Ballet in the Palace of Fine Arts as its permanent venue since October 11, 1959.

With more than 30 million spectators and countless recognitions, Amalia Hernández’s artistic legacy remains valid thanks to the more than 120 original choreographies with great technical difficulty, elaborate typical costumes, and first-rate artists, consolidating the Ballet as the best dance company in the world in its genre.

About The Hecho en Las Américas Series

The 2024-25 season marks The Soraya’s tenth year presenting the Hecho en Las Américas series,  showcasing a performing arts center dedicated to serving Latin American artists and audiences from around the world.

“The Valley and greater Los Angeles are home to some of the most vibrant Spanish-speaking communities,” stated Thor Steingraber, The Soraya’s Executive and Artistic Director. “While this has been true for decades, we recognize that many arts organizations have not fully served them.  I believe The Soraya is the only organization in the region to offer an entire series—Hecho en Las  Américas—dedicated to the diverse music and dance forms of Mexico, Central America, and  South America. We are proud to serve the nearby communities and also celebrate that entire  families travel great distances to attend our performances.”

The 2024-25 Hecho en Las Américas series features nine performances, commencing with Aida Cuevas’s celebration of Juan Gabriel on October 12. The Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI), a 501(c)(3) public charity and trusted intermediary focused on the economic security of people in the arts, is administering this Fund.

Individuals may apply only once for up to $10,000. Funds are unrestricted and can be used in any way that alleviates financial hardship. Moreover, as a federally qualified disaster under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, financial support is not counted as taxable income. We encourage artists and arts workers who are of low incomes, of historically underserved populations, and those with disabilities to apply.

CatrinaQ’s Star Whores

Meet Catrina Q.

I’m a SoCal native and have been living, producing and performing in the NoHo Arts District since 2007. My background is in opera, classical ballet, and musical theatre. In addition to performing, I teach private voice, dance, acting, and group dance/fitness classes in L.A. and NYC. Over the years, CatrinaQ Performing Arts had had residencies at three local theatres, including The Sherry, NoHo London Music Hall, and, most recently, The Secret Rose. During the pandemic, I took our productions to Zoom and now we’re back live, doing shows in NoHo.

Tell us a bit more about the fundraiser.

CatrinaQ’s Star Whores is our most popular parody cabaret. With so many of our friends and community affected by the Los Angeles Wildfires, it made absolute sense to take to Zoom and do what we do best- make people laugh. We know that laughter and music can be so therapeutic. Doing our show on Zoom can reach so many more people than a live production but it also allows us to include my cast in New York City, all of whom have grown up or lived in L.A.

Who will benefit from the fundraiser?

Families for Black Lives, dedicated to the families of the Eaton Fires, and Pasadena Humane Society. We are currently looking into helping displaced Latine folk, as well.

Why the name CatrinaQ’s Star Whores?

I chose the name CatrinaQ’s Star Whores because we are pretty much walking in the footsteps of Fanny Brice- all dolled up but bawdy, loud, and silly. My company started as cabaret and then became caburlesque but we quickly discovered we were way more quirky and absurd than sexy.

CatrinaQ’s Star Whores

Tell us more about what folks can expect from CatrinaQ’s Star Whores.

This show is a “telethon” so be prepared for colorful, loud, and senseless performances akin to cable access bliss. There will be singing, comedy, and maybe even some group dancing with the entire cast dressed as Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park- that’s our next live parody on March 15 at Madilyn Clark Studios.

As always, we’ve rewritten some classics to fit our unique style. “You Make Me Feel So Hung” is just one of the glorious tunes you’ll hear at the show.

Our shows are always a good time, whether you’re familiar with the theme or not. We are also a very diverse group of performers so we offer something for everyone. But the best part about virtual theatre is that you can enjoy it from your couch with a cocktail in paw.

This show has eight performers, including myself, and features most of my repertory cast:

Darla Eden @darla.the.unicorn
Britta Hoskins  @brittahoskinsgonzalez
Jeff Hopkins @jeffreyhopkins
John Koladziej @johnnykola
Robert Long @rrlongii
Catrina Quintanilla @catrinaQ
Crystal Thompson @crystallovesdawn
Jessica Vaughn @jessica_vaughn_art

CatrinaQ’s Star Whores

Do you have a dream project you’d like to work on?

My dream project is just to be able to do shows locally. I would love to find an affordable theatre in this district. Post-pandemic, the prices literally quadrupled on me so we’re shopping around and hoping we find the right fit soon.

What do you like about living in the NoHo Arts District?

The walkability to everything! The diners, the movies, the theatres, and my fave, NoBar!

What would you like to see more of?

I’d love to see more musical theatre out here. More singing, more live music outdoors. And I’d love to see more variety shows with that vaudeville, burlesque flavor.

[NoHo Arts District, CA] – Tap shoes kick pointe shoes aside in this American version of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker Suite, on December 12 at The Soraya!

On December 12, Michelle Dorrance returns to The Soraya (following her 2023 debut in Turn it Out with Tiler Peck) with Dorrance Dance: The Nutcracker Suite. The performance, co-created by Dorrance with Josette Wiggan and Hannah Heller, caught attention in the news following its White House invitation by First Lady Jill Biden. The jazzy new vision of the classic holiday tradition is set to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s arrangement of the Tchaikovsky classic.

“It’s a unique telling of this classic story, living very much in a very traditional jazz and vernacular space and percussive, rooted in the tap dance space,” Michelle Dorrance said in an interview with Soraya Executive and Artistic Director Thor Steingraber. “It couldn’t be more of a literal dream to work with Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky…because it’s such an unbelievably swingin’ version…there’s horn, a funky baseline, a swingin’ feel.”

Co-creator Josette Wiggan, in the same interview, echoed Dorrance’s sentiments, saying the whimsical and fun show pays homage to their elders but also bridges the gaps between the jazz and tap worlds in a way that “creates a fun space for kids to imagine and adults to reimage a (more traditional) Nutcracker they may have seen growing up.”

About the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya)

The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for The Performing Arts (The Soraya) is an award-winning, state-of-the-art 1,700-seat theatre designed and built by HGA Architects and Engineers and opened in January 2011 as the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC). Through a transformative gift by Younes and Soraya Nazarian, the venue was renamed The Soraya in 2017. Vibrant

programming has served to establish The Soraya as the intellectual and cultural heart of the San  Fernando Valley and its 1.8 million residents and as one of the top arts and culture venues in  Southern California. Since its inaugural season, The Soraya has presented over 500 artists and companies across the genres of music, dance, theater, and film and is a highly in-demand location for filming and rental events.

The Soraya’s 2024-25 Season boldly advances the expansive sound of orchestras both traditional and contemporary; the freestyle vibe of jazz; an array of dance luminaries, and a cultural bounty drawn from the musical well of global voices. The Soraya continues its vigorous commitment to innovating, excelling, and amplifying access by offering a wide variety of performances that reflect  Los Angeles’ many distinctive communities and featuring new and original work and artists from the local region as well as nationally and around the world.

Located on the vibrant campus of California State University Northridge (CSUN), The Soraya and the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication share an integral link that enhances student access and opportunities in the arts and performing arts. A $5 million contribution from record producer and former California Lieutenant Governor Mike Curb was pivotal in ensuring the completion and opening of The Soraya in 2011. For his founding support and in acknowledgment of the integral relationship between the Mike Curb College and The Soraya,  Mike Curb is recognized as one of The Soraya’s Cornerstone Benefactors. This partnership fosters academic and artistic excellence, elevating the talents and the future growth of CSUN’s students through master classes, student tickets, concerts of student ensembles, and students appearing alongside renowned artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Aida Cuevas, and Martha Graham Dance  Company.
