Surviving Covid – Join a Community

I recently had the honor and pleasure of speaking at a conference to hundreds of actors from around the world.

It was a virtual conference online through zoom.  Afterwards, I had interviews with many of them individually. It was a great learning experience for me and hopefully for them.  In my personal interviews I got to chat with people from all kinds of diverse places. Some got up at 3 in the morning to make our meetings due to the time differences. I met with actors in Austria, Germany, Poland, Italy, Paris, London, China, and all around the US including, Atlanta, South Dakota, Alabama, New York, and throughout the Midwest.  Some of them were in big cities, some in small rural towns. What an honor to be invited into their private spaces and have some time to discuss acting, their careers, and coach them on their own unique journey.

What I discovered in these meetings is how similar artists are in spirit, desire, and creativity.

No matter where in the world, small town or big city, a lot of the conversation had similarities.   What we had in common, including myself, is the need, desire, and passion about working with a community of like-minded people.  There is a craving to be around other artists, to be challenged, have provocative conversation about art, how to get it out there, and how to get ourselves out there.

This is one good thing that has surfaced from coping with the Covid crisis. It is the opportunity to be a part of a community, and exchange ideas and work that is outside the city and area where you may be living.

Now no matter where you are located, you can get involved and be around people with your shared passion.

Just a few months ago the only people who could benefit from The Actors Workout Studio, which includes our theater, master classes, training, coaching, performances, and events, were those who live within driving distance. Now, that is now open to anyone around the world.

My advice to actors where ever you are is to find and get involved with a community of artists. Find one. Find one that supports you. Find one where you have similar interests. Find one that challenges you and your art.  Find one that pushes you. There are great online classes, theater companies, writers groups, acting troupes, director assemblies, film cooperatives, and all kinds of  support groups that can support you and your art during this time.

Many are free and available to check out. Try them out, and see if they serve you.  It is a way to keep stimulated, inspired, and expand your view of yourself, your art, and your contribution as an artist.

With all the challenges and restrictions of Covid, there is this new opportunity to be a part of a community. And that is what we want right now and what I saw that so many people need during these times. That being, a sense of community and belonging, and a chance to be seen.

Get out and explore the possibilities, get outside yourself and find a community to be a part of. Geography is no longer an obstacle.

All the best.
