[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Mami, What’s Your 20? – License to Be a Mother Trucker playing at Whitefire Theatre through October 20.
Over the years, I have attended many a play, event, and solo show at the Whitefire Theatre. And for my time and effort, I have been rewarded with wonderful writing, clever staging, expert direction, and vividly written characters. And just when I thought I could not be surprised any further, I show up and am completely mesmerized by the subject of this solo show, Nadeen Gautier.
The charisma and raw emotional output from this “Mother Trucker” was infectious and endearing.
I usually sit somewhere in the middle of the theatre, not too close, but not too far. For some reason, I sat in the front row. I’m not sure why, but something told me I was in for a ride. Before I continue to gush over Ms. Gautier, I have to mention the apt direction and on-the-mark lighting and sound. Sometimes this area of a production is somewhat wanting, but not in this one. The show works so well with the proper technical assistance.
Now, back to Nadeen Gautier. Of all the characters that Nadeen portrayed, ‘Abuelita” steals the show. This generational sage seems to guide our main character down the uneasy highway of life. Nadeen’s charm, strength, and humor in her story kept me at the edge of my seat waiting to hear if she finally passes her Class 1 test. I was on her side from the very beginning and her champion by the end. What was invoked in me was a sense of joy for her. When she won, I won. When she stumbled, I stumbled with her. This is a unique feeling in solo shows. And I for one am happy she shared her journey with me.
This show was more than an empowerment of one over a series of obstacles. This show was about the triumph of the human spirit.
I would be curious to know the story of her life as a dancer and now as a mother. Both were addressed during the show, but I wanted to continue to stay on the journey when the curtain came down.
Nadeen Gautier is a true storyteller with one heck of a story to tell. In my book, this show passes with an ‘A’.
